What is meant by the term Plaque?
It is a sticky film containing millions of bacteria which gradually builds up on the surface of teeth. These germs break down sugary foods chemically to produce acids. The acids eat through the outer Enamel layer of the tooth, exposing the soft Dentine which lies beneath. The result is tooth decay – or Dental Caries, as dentists call it.
How can a child’s teeth be protected from Plaque formation? Firstly, restrict the number of times that sugars are eaten. Each time sugar enters the mouth, the teeth are vulnerable to attack for about an hour. If sticky foods containing sugar (sweets, toffees, chocolates, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks etc.) are limited to the standard mealtimes, and if snacks between meals are limited to sugar-free foods, the teeth are less likely to decay.
Secondly, ensure that a child’s teeth are brushed after each meal – or at least twice a day. If sweets or chocolates are eaten, teeth should be brushed as soon afterwards as possible. Most children will need help with brushing until they are old enough to do it properly by themselves, which is usually harga plakat around the age of five.
Thirdly, make the most of fluoride protection. Fluoride is a chemical which strengthens teeth against decay. In some parts of the world, it is added to the water supply, but where water is not so treated by fluoridation, it is wise to take fluoride supplements. Fluoride toothpastes do help – it has been shown that regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste results in a 25% reduction in tooth decay.
